Not Unlike The Waves

Vocals, Lyrics, and Delivery

Singing is most often a combination of voice and lyrics. ‘Vocals’ is used to describe the nature and quality of the voice. ‘Lyrics’ describes the words being sung by the vocals. A word that is used a little less commonly is ‘delivery’ which is perhaps most important. A great voice has to sound right in relation to the lyrics, and great lyrics mean nothing if they aren’t sung well.

Dichotomy of Loneliness: The Delgados vs. Daniel Powter

Posted in Comparison, Daniel Powter, Music Video, The Delgados, symphonic pop by 21stcenturydigitalboy on December 8, 2008

Songs being as emotional as they usually are and written so often by the depressed, it’s no rarity at all to hear songs about loneliness. Two cases of such lyrical themes caught my attention with their relative similarity of performance and far more obvious similarity of videos.

The Delgados – Coming in From the Cold

The Protomen

Posted in Rock Opera, The Protomen by 21stcenturydigitalboy on December 3, 2008

I have more or less thought so for a few weeks now, but The Protomen self titled album is probably the greatest rock opera I’ve ever heard. It’s unique, extremely emotional, and musically brilliant. To give you an idea of the style, it’s like an album-length version of the Muse song Knights of Cydonia. But even more manly and epic and amazing. Plus it’s about Mega Man. Shit just doesn’t get more badass than that.

Those Beautiful Words

Posted in The Seasons, Ye Olde Relic, avant-garde metal, black metal, death metal by 21stcenturydigitalboy on November 24, 2008

The Seasons, debut album of Ye Olde Relic, is very quickly becoming one of my favorite albums, but it’s so fucking long that I’ve listened to it more than 10 times and still ahve a hard time picking songs apart. I plan to listen to the album at least 50 times before I can say anything definitive about it. So far, I’ve mostly concentrated on finding the innumerable memorable moments on the album that fill me with a swelling emotion of awesome. They are the sort of moments ou get excited knowing they will come up, and this album has many.

The first is on the amazing second track, April. Around 2 minutes and 6 minutes into the song a heavily distroted female voice echoes over the sunny and powerful guitar riffs. The song is the perfect reflection of the month and this voice encompasses and defines the emotion. The way it is sung makes my entire body feel like a part of the words and I never want it to end. It’s the kind of song you keep on repeat just to not loose that feeling.
